Il San Pietro di Positano
Positano, Italy
Cliff-carved sanctuary east of Positano
Il San Pietro di Positano emerges from the cliff face on the Amalfitana east of Positano, its eight terraced floors invisible from the sea — by intention. Carlo Cinque carved the family-owned hotel into the limestone in 1962 and the result remains a study in stealth luxury: rooms cantilevered into rock, an elevator descending to a private beach club, and the Michelin two-starred Zass restaurant perched on the topmost terrace. Bougainvillea and jasmine drape every balcony, the seasonal Carlino beach bar opens onto a tiny private cove, and the silence — broken only by sea and birdsong — explains the property's decade-long return guest list.
